International Practice & CUTTING-Edge APPROACHES

It is time for a fresh direction!

At Bright Lights, we recognize the urgent need to shift our focus from individual-centric mental health interventions to a broader, community-focused approach. This perspective aligns with the insights gathered from the WHO's World Mental Health Report 2022, which emphasizes the critical importance of mental health for everyone, globally. The report highlights the high needs for mental health care and the inadequacy of current responses, calling for a deeper value and commitment to mental health and a reshaping of environments that influence it.

The World Health Organization (adjunct with the United Nations) report underscores the growing prevalence of mental health conditions, noting a 13% rise in mental health conditions and substance use disorders over the last decade. It points out that mental health conditions are a leading cause of disability, with depression being one of the top causes. Sadly, individuals with severe mental health conditions often face human rights violations, discrimination, and stigma. Despite the availability of cost-effective treatments, a substantial gap persists between those needing care and those who have access to it.

In his message on the launch of the World Mental Health Report 2022, UN Secretary-General António Guterres labeled the current situation a global mental health crisis. He emphasized that nearly a billion people, including millions of children and young people, are living with mental health conditions, yet most lack access to treatment. This crisis poses a significant human and financial burden, with depression and anxiety alone costing the global economy approximately $1 trillion each year.

This situation highlights a grave humanitarian crisis in mental health care, where the right to mental health and wellness is not being adequately addressed, especially in countries with limited funding or support for mental health services. It’s a moral obligation for nations and communities with more resources to extend support and aid to those in need.
